Australian Medical Council Examination

The Australian Medical Council (AMC) examination process is a key pathway for foreign-trained doctors to practice medicine in Australia. Below are the steps to undertake this process:

1. Understand the Pathways

The AMC has different pathways for foreign-trained doctors based on their qualifications and work experience:

  • Competent Authority Pathway: For doctors from countries with recognized medical boards (e.g., UK, USA, Canada).
  • Standard Pathway: For other international medical graduates (IMGs). This involves the AMC exams.
  • Specialist Pathway: For doctors seeking specialist recognition.

Most foreign doctors follow the Standard Pathway, which requires AMC exams.

2. Verify Eligibility

Ensure you have:

  • A primary medical degree listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
  • Completed at least 12 months of internship or equivalent training.

3. Create an AMC Account

  1. Visit the AMC website.
  2. Register for an AMC Online account to access their portal.
  3. Submit an application for verification of your medical credentials via the EPIC (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) system.

4. Credential Verification

  1. Log into the EPIC portal.
  2. Upload your primary medical qualification documents for verification.
  3. Pay the applicable fees.
  4. Once verified, the AMC will confirm your eligibility to proceed.

5. AMC Examination Process

The AMC exam consists of two parts:

a. AMC CAT MCQ Exam

  • Format: 150 multiple-choice questions over 3.5 hours.
  • Content: Tests clinical knowledge across various disciplines (e.g., medicine, surgery, pediatrics, etc.).
  • Booking: Schedule through your AMC account. The exam is available in test centers worldwide or online.
  • Fee: Around AUD 2,500 (subject to change).

b. AMC Clinical Examination

  • Format: A practical exam assessing clinical skills in simulated scenarios (14 stations, 10 active, 4 rest).
  • Booking: Available after passing the MCQ exam. Exams are held in Australia.
  • Fee: Around AUD 3,530 (subject to change).
  • Alternative: Many candidates opt for work-based assessments through approved institutions instead of the clinical exam.

6. English Language Proficiency

Before applying for registration, you must demonstrate English proficiency via:

  • IELTS Academic: Minimum overall score of 7.5 with no band below 7.0.
  • OET (Occupational English Test): B grades in all components.

7. Apply for Medical Registration

After completing the AMC exams, you can apply for:

  • Provisional Registration: For supervised practice in Australia.
  • General Registration: After completing a period of supervised practice (usually 12 months).

8. Prepare for the Process

  • Join preparation courses or study groups for AMC exams.
  • Use resources such as AMC Handbooks, sample questions, and practice exams.

9. Apply for Jobs

Once registered, you can apply for positions within the Australian healthcare system, starting with supervised roles and progressing based on your experience.
